Asphalt! Where would we be without it!

Asphalt, It’s used in nearly every country in the world to pave pavements, roads, highways & driveways. It is relatively inexpensive to produce compared to other materials, is very easy to work with and is capable of withstanding heavy traffic and almost all environmental conditions.

One of the great benefits is that it can be relaid once recycled and the tar comes from a natural source. On the downside is that it can deteriorate over time if not mixed correctly or is not laid in a professional way. Other factors like the extremes of hot & cold weather & overloading the surface with heavy vehicle traffic.
Regular maintenance, such as crack sealing, resurfacing the topcoat and patching any defects in the surface can extend the lifespan and performance of any surface laid or constructed with asphalt.

What is Asphalt made from?

So what is one of the worlds most widely used paving materials made from? The basic mix of materials is quarried crushed stone and liquid tar. This mixture has changed little over the years. It’s a simple concept that has allowed us to drive, walk & cycle over an even, flat surface.

One of the great advances with in recent years and is becoming more important as we better understand climate change is the need to recyle and reuse again the asphalt we replace in highway & pavement construction.
